Retrench  to make the costs lower in order to save money. This is usually done by companies when the economic situation is bad. (Noun form: retrenchment)
Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you very much for attending this meeting today. First of all, I would like you to know that I value all the time and effort that you contributed to this company. However, it is getting more difficult for the company to stay afloat amidst this economic slump. We have to retrench, we have to cut costs. And because of this, it is inevitable to lay off some of you. I am sorry for breaking this sad news to you.
